Lhotka Parish

The Parish

The Lhotka parish is one of the youngest parishes in Prague. It was established on 15 April 1942 with the church of Our Lady Queen of Peace. Sunday services are attended by approximately one thousand people, among them a lot of young families with children.

The Parish Church

The parish church is dedicated to Our Lady Queen of Peace. This title refers to events that took place shortly after the end of World War II, when on 3 November 1918 the Maria column standing in the Old Town Square was pulled down and destroyed by a mob driven by anti-catholic sentiments. A symbolic renewal of the column took place on 7 November 1937 when the Lhotka church was consecrated,  a replica of the Maria statue that used to stand on the top of the original column becoming the main motif of the altar. In the years 1970 – 1973 the interior of the church was reconstructed according to a plan worked out by architect Václav Dvořák. The aim was to make the space more suitable for liturgy as celebrated after the Second Vatican Council.

The most unique visual feature of the Lhotka church are its Stations of the Cross created by academic sculptor Karel Stádník in the years 1973 – 1975.

In 1991, the space of the church was expanded by the chapel of  the Sacred Heart of Jesus based on the architectural plan of architect František Fousek.
